Counseling provides a neutral ground to discuss these issues openly, helping all parties involved to reach a better understanding or compromise.
  • Is counseling for polyamorous or open relationships only for when there are problems?
Not at all. While many seek counseling during times of conflict or transition, it can also be a proactive measure to strengthen relationships, improve communication, and preemptively address potential issues. It’s a space for ongoing growth and development for everyone involved.

For couples, it may also focus on issues related to co-parenting, financial settlements, and establishing a respectful post-divorce relationship.

It can provide a structured environment to discuss the logistics of separation, work on co-parenting strategies, and address any lingering emotional issues. It's also helpful in minimizing the conflict and ensuring that the process is as amicable and respectful as possible for both parties.

  • What is compassionate couples communication counseling?
We have developed a specific form of communication that we teach couples. Through years of couples counseling, we've seen what works. Our therapists will help you learn a new, more effective way of communicating with your partner. When you and your partner learn how to focus first on connecting with one another, express your needs effectively and solve problems together you'll find new meaning in your relationship. With Compassionate Couples Communication, outside stressors that used to tear your relationship apart now will bring you closer together. The Three Stages of Compassionate Communication for Couples: Connection Together we will work to help you connect as a couple. We will take the time to move from fighting to listening. This first step is really about focusing on showing that you care for one another. When you both feel valued and cared for, there is less tension in the relationship and arguments are de-escalated. This space makes your relationship a safe space to open up and be vulnerable. Express Needs Once your relationship is seen as a safe, caring space, it's time to express your needs. In couples counseling sessions, we will talk about how you can communicate your own needs effectively. We'll also discuss how to actively listen to the needs of your partner so you can react in a supportive, nonjudgmental way. By learning to deeply understand what both partners need, you can begin looking for solutions together. Solving Problems Together When you fully understand what each partner needs, it's time to start solving problems. You'll learn to work together to solve problems as they come up in a way that leaves both people feeling good about the decision.

  • What can we expect in our first couples counseling session?
In the first session, your therapist will likely ask about your relationship history, the challenges you’re facing, and what you hope to achieve through counseling. It’s a time for the therapist to understand both partners' perspectives and for you to get a feel for the therapist's style. The initial session sets the stage for future work, establishing goals and expectations for the therapy process.
  • What is couples counseling, and how can it benefit our relationship?
Couples counseling, also known as couples therapy or marital therapy, is a type of psychotherapy that aims to improve communication, resolve conflicts, and strengthen the relationship between partners. It can benefit relationships by helping couples understand each other better, address underlying issues, and develop healthier ways of interacting. Whether facing specific challenges like infidelity, financial stress, or general communication problems, couples counseling provides tools and strategies to navigate these issues together.
  • When should we consider starting couples counseling?
Couples may consider counseling at any stage in their relationship when they feel disconnected, are experiencing frequent conflicts, or when they encounter specific challenges they cannot resolve on their own. It’s also beneficial for couples looking to strengthen their relationship, improve understanding, and prevent future issues. Seeking therapy early on can be particularly effective before patterns become deeply entrenched.
