Grief is defined as the “response to a loss.”  That loss can be a job, a relationship, divorce, a body part, your health, becoming an empty nester, and the physical death of an individual. Whatever it is you will experience grief over the loss.  When you encounter a traumatic event, you do-not bounce back like a rubber ball. It sometimes takes days, months, and sometimes years to process what you are feeling and learning to adapt to a new normal.

Life is a process of adapting to new circumstances. It is about a sense of awareness. Sometimes you may feel a sense of abandonment and rejection and feeling a sense of detachment due to a lack of communication in the relationship or blending a family and making the adjustments to being parents and working on your career.  Adjustments are necessary in every phase of life.

I became a therapist to assist people in navigating through this journey called life. As we evolve, we will be faced with various obstacles along the way.  Having a coach on the sideline helping you with the plays will aid you to feel less anxious. Allow me to be that coach in assisting you in adjusting through the various stages of life.

Most couples see dramatic improvement in 12 - 16 sessions, individual progress can take longer or shorter depending on the issue being addressed. You and your therapist can decide together if you would benefit from more or less time as you continue treatment.

  • What is counseling for polyamorous or open relationships, and how does it differ from traditional couples therapy?
Counseling for polyamorous or open relationships is specifically designed to address the unique challenges and dynamics that these types of relationships entail. Unlike traditional couples therapy, which typically focuses on the issues between two partners, poly/open relationship counseling takes into consideration the complexities of multiple partners, including communication, jealousy, boundary setting, and negotiation of relationship agreements. • Can counseling help if one partner is unsure about being in a polyamorous or open relationship?
Yes, counseling can be incredibly beneficial in situations where partners have differing levels of comfort or interest in pursuing a polyamorous or open relationship. A therapist can help individuals explore their feelings, fears, and desires related to non-monogamy, assisting couples (or multiple partners) in communicating their needs and boundaries more effectively. Counseling provides a neutral ground to discuss these issues openly, helping all parties involved to reach a better understanding or compromise.
  • Is counseling for polyamorous or open relationships only for when there are problems?
Not at all. While many seek counseling during times of conflict or transition, it can also be a proactive measure to strengthen relationships, improve communication, and preemptively address potential issues. It’s a space for ongoing growth and development for everyone involved.

One partner's participation can lead to positive changes within the relationship by exploring and improving their own behaviors, reactions, and ways of communicating. This can sometimes encourage the other partner to join the counseling process later on.

It can provide a structured environment to discuss the logistics of separation, work on co-parenting strategies, and address any lingering emotional issues. It's also helpful in minimizing the conflict and ensuring that the process is as amicable and respectful as possible for both parties.

  • What is compassionate couples communication counseling?
We have developed a specific form of communication that we teach couples. Through years of couples counseling, we've seen what works. Our therapists will help you learn a new, more effective way of communicating with your partner. When you and your partner learn how to focus first on connecting with one another, express your needs effectively and solve problems together you'll find new meaning in your relationship. With Compassionate Couples Communication, outside stressors that used to tear your relationship apart now will bring you closer together. The Three Stages of Compassionate Communication for Couples: Connection Together we will work to help you connect as a couple. We will take the time to move from fighting to listening. This first step is really about focusing on showing that you care for one another. When you both feel valued and cared for, there is less tension in the relationship and arguments are de-escalated. This space makes your relationship a safe space to open up and be vulnerable. Express Needs Once your relationship is seen as a safe, caring space, it's time to express your needs. In couples counseling sessions, we will talk about how you can communicate your own needs effectively. We'll also discuss how to actively listen to the needs of your partner so you can react in a supportive, nonjudgmental way. By learning to deeply understand what both partners need, you can begin looking for solutions together. Solving Problems Together When you fully understand what each partner needs, it's time to start solving problems. You'll learn to work together to solve problems as they come up in a way that leaves both people feeling good about the decision.

  • Can we do couples counseling if one partner is more committed to the process than the other?
Yes, it’s not uncommon for one partner to be more hesitant or less enthusiastic about therapy. Skilled couples therapists are experienced in engaging reluctant partners by creating a non-judgmental and safe environment. Over time, as the process unfolds and positive changes begin to occur, both partners often become more invested in the counseling process.
  • How long does couples counseling typically last?
The duration of couples counseling varies depending on the couple's specific issues, goals, and progress. Some couples may find improvement after a few sessions, while others might engage in therapy for several months or longer. The therapist will work with you to set realistic timeframes for achieving your goals.
